New York’s Subway Stations To Get Cell Coverage

October 1, 2007

After holding out for 68,147 years, New York City Transit has announced that they will finally allow service coverage for mobile phones on their subways. A deal was made with Transit Wireless, who will invest close to $47 million over the next 10 years for the priviledge to install underground cell towers that will provide coverage to wireless customers in the area.

Service providers will have to lease the underground network by paying Transit Wireless for the talk time used on the network. Apparently, service will not be extended to the tunnels themselves but will be limited to the stations.

One step closer to a world with total voice and data coverage. ;)
